TRB: Training Review Board

The Training Review Board (TRB) is a committee that meets on an as needed basis to discuss the training progression of pilots who are experiencing difficulty completing initial, upgrade, or recurrent training.  The committee is comprised of four members employed by Compass Airlines – 2 Compass line pilots who are members of ALPA, Manager of Instructor Standards & Administration, and Manager of Flight Operations Standards.

When the TRB meets to discuss the progression for an individual pilot, the committee reviews the challenges the pilot has had throughout the training program, recommends any remedial/additional training, and determines if the pilot has received all of the prescribed training he/she was given or due according to the Compass AQP training program and the Pilot contract.  If the TRB is unable to reach a unanimous agreement on the course of action for a pilot, the four members of the committee will vote and the Manager of Flight Operations Training will be the tie-breaking vote.

The Pilot contract lists items that trigger the convening of a TRB.  These items can be found in section 11.R.3.c, specifically:

  • After a Pilot’s second progress check, in any order of occurrence
  • After the second time a Pilot is not recommended for a validation or evaluation event
  • After the first time a pilot is not recommended for a line check or to continue OE training
  • Any unsuccessful validation or progress check – The TRB will be informed in writing, complete with the Pilot’s contact information, and decide, internally, if the TRB should be convened to review the Pilot’s training.
  • In each case after failing any first opportunity of an evaluation (LOE)
  • In each case after failing a line check or OE attempt

Anytime one of the above occurs, a meeting is called between the members.  Typically, prior to the TRB meeting, a member of the Training Committee will contact the pilot to discuss his/her training and any concerns or questions the pilot may have.  During the meeting, the committee will review the pilot’s training records including any instructor notes, discuss any comments or concerns expressed by the pilot from when a Training Committee member contacted him/her, and determine what, if any, additional/remedial training should take place. Once a course of action has been voted on, the plan is put into place and communication is sent to the pilot via email from the Manager of Instructor Standards & Administration.  If the pilot is recommended for remedial training, Training Scheduling will contact the pilot with an updated training schedule.

Additional information regarding the TRB can be found in section 11 of the Pilot contract.  If you have any questions about the TRB process, please feel free to email the Training Committee: cpztraining@alpa.org
